The Descent experiencing problems on Sony Blu-ray players… except PS3

The DescentLet’s start with the bad news. Even though it has earned great praise form online users for its cutting-edge interactive features, the Lionsgate movie “The Descent” is reportedly encountering compatibility problems with Sony‘s new BDP first-gen Blu-ray player.

“The Descent” hit Blu-ray a day after Christmas and boasts extensive extras that were created in the BD-Java environment. These extra features include the Blu-ray format’s first picture-in-picture video commentary feature, as well as extensive featurettes presented in full 1080p HD video.

Various online forums and message boards have been awash with reports of users seeing only a blank screen when trying to play “The Descent” on their Sony players. Judging from the reports, it seems Sony’s early batch of Blu-ray players lack correct support for playback of BD-Java-enhanced titles. A firmware update to correct this issue has yet to be released.

Now, on to the good news. If you have a PS3, you can watch “The Descent” in all its glory. Yep, the movie plays back just fine on the PS3, as well as on other current Blu-ray players provided they are equipped with the latest firmware updates from their respective manufacturers.

Yes, it’s a slow news day.
