The Future of Sony Portable Gaming – A Foldable Screen?

patentA new patent filed by Sony may mean big things for the future of portable gaming, and gadgets in general.

The technology isn’t too hard too understand, although the patent info would lead you to believe otherwise. The new tech is described as a electronic device comprised of a flexible polymer containing conductive rubber struts. Furthermore, the device is filled with a gel of aluminosilicate particles suspended in silicone oil which hardens when a electromagnetic current is passed through the aforementioned rubber struts. And presto, the once soft and squishy roll is now a solid sheet.

What’s also important to note is that the process of hardening only takes milliseconds, and does not require much power to occur.

While Sony has not mentioned how they would like to integrate this technology into future products, it seems like it’d be a no-brainer to make a PSP2 or an upgraded PSP that makes use of it.
