The Godfather: The Don’s Edition designer John Calhoun interview
The Godfather: The Don’s Edition game versions for the Wii and the Playstation 3 are coming out March 20. Newsweek caught up with the game’s designer, John Calhoun in an email interview, to ask him about his insight on making the two titles.
John says that their engineering team at Electronic Arts (EA) began development on The Godfather early last summer. The design staff was already familiar with the SIXAXIS controller then, and it took the engineers only a couple more weeks to get The Godfather running in beautiful high-definition, and 30 frames-per-second.
Comparing the gameplay of The Godfather in the PS3, and the Wii, John says that the Wii version is more physical, because of the Wii’s motion sensors. The PS3 version, meanwhile, is more immersive, with the aid of Sony‘s next-gen controller.
One of the challenges in making the PS3 game was the loss of the rumble in the old PS2 Dual Shock controller. But SIXAXIS, having a very impressive range of sensitivity, offers a new sense of physical involvement in playing the game. There are more grab attacks in the PS3 game, which makes for a very satisfying game play.
The team considered using motion sensing in driving, but gave that up because it was hard to adapt it to the fast-paced action of The Godfather‘s chase sequences. But then, SIXAXIS already gives the players a unique, engrossing experience, making them very self-conscious of their smallest gestures.
John Calhoun is also promised more addictive games involving the PS3’s unique controller in the future. He and his team is ready to explore these possibilities – meaning more great SIXAXIS-equipped games for us.
