The PS3: the supply line

Curious about how the PS3s are gonna get to the retail stores where your friends are camped out at right now? Wondering how fast supply should replenish? SCEA‘s Kaz Hirai told this bit to the press:

We are trying everything we can to get as many units into the North American market as possible. The thing that we’re trying to focus on now is shortening the lead time from the factories to the retailers and consumers. Usually, something this size and weight we would put on a boat, but what we’re doing is chartering planes to fly them in … that combined with trying to ramp up production as quickly as possible as well.

Of course the real challenge here is to continually restock supply to retailers. Hirai said that Sony will be replenishing the retail channel on a weekly basis. However, SCEA executive vice-president Jack Tretton, sort of promised a bit more by saying that retailers will be getting shipments daily.

If he means that supply will be continuous after the initial 400,000, than that’s certainly a good thing. But that’s just us wishing for the best. Well we certainly hope things go as planned. We wouldn’t want a repeat of previous console launches. *twiddles thumbs…*
