The PS3 won’t be using gamerscores
Less drive to be uber, or a new means for being the best? According to Jack Tretton, executive vice president for Sony Computer Entertainment America, there won’t be any gamerscores for the PS3.
That’s right. The PS3 will not have any direct equivalent to the gamerscore system implemented on the Xbox 360. He says that their approach is there to make things on the console more games-centric. He cites a rather important point here, actually: “It’s very difficult to draw analogies [between] your success on SOCOM and your success on Madden. Madden players care about peoples’ success on Madden.”
What does this mean in terms of feeling accomplished for being a good gamer? Their games-centric approach lends itself to a different kind of ranking system, which won’t be connected across all games for the PS3. Rather, you get a game-specific leaderboard system which, Tretton says, will allow publishers “to have the flexibility to have a robust ranking system, on a game-by-game basis.” Sounds good. At least, no one will confuse your future dating sim skills for actual gameplay ability on an FPS or sports sim.
Why you’d make a leaderboard system for a dating sim, though, is beyond me.
