The world of Square Enix now has a currency

crystalFabula Nova Crystallis, Crystal Chronicles, Crystal Bearers, Crystal Meth. Totally kidding about that last one, but you get the idea – Square Enix loves crystals…possibly more than their other favorite word, “chaos”. At any rate, the crystal-lovin’ continues with Crysta, which from now on will serve as game currency for Square Enix.

Just like points for Microsoft and the Nintendo Wii, Crysta can be used for online purchases, particularly for the publisher’s online community games, such as Fantasy Earth Zero, and for purchases from the Square Enix eStore. Each Crysta is worth ¥ 1, and Squeenix will offer ¥ 500 (about US$ 5.50), ¥ 1000 (US$ 11), ¥ 2000 (US$ 22), ¥ 3,000 (US$ 33), ¥ 5,000 (US$ 55), and ¥ 10,000 (US$ 110) denominations.

So far, the Crysta service will only go as far as Japan, but with Final Fantasy XIV coming next year, we could probably expect the online game to charge Crysta even in the West.
