This is Modal Kombat – playing Mortal Kombat with guitars
The gaming audiophiles of Game Play are currently running a show down at the Brick Theater in Brooklyn, New York, and what makes their theater festival even more special is that it has one awesome twist: gaming. Using modified electronic guitars hooked up to a console, these musicians go and play music and MK simultaneously.

David Hindman, creator of “Modal Kombat”, gave a few words on how it worked. “The short version is that I hacked into old-school video game consoles and re-configured their commands to respond to MIDI and/or Audio (the information from our guitars),” he said.
Once the basic system was in place, we started experimenting with all kinds of different mappings. (scales triggers move right, chords trigger “throw lighting”, g-string triggers “punch” and on and on).” he continued. “Then, using this principle, we started experimenting with all kinds of different games.”
Game Play’s gaming music theater festival will continue until July 25th, so those looking to drop by can still catch the show. Get your tickets here.
