TIME Is Touched by the DS Lite
TIME.com awarded the DS Lite with a very special honor by naming it “Gadget of the Week.” The people at the magazine giant seem more taken with the system’s games than hardware. Although they compliment/insult it by comparing it to a “a miniaturized version of the new white-glossy MacBook,” they continually mention the quality of the games, especially ones in the Touch! Generations category.
TIME compliments Nintendo’s work in “amplifying efforts to lure non-gamers” through software. The DS is offering games that connect with people, not just gamers. For example, the upcoming Talking DS Cooking Navigator will give hungry housewives a reason to buy the system. Brain Age‘s Sudoku feature spoke to adult intellectuals who hadn’t ever tried gaming. This thought inspired TIME.com writer Wilson Rothman to give the DS Lite the great honor of “Gadget of the Week.”
Although this may sound great and inspirational, it may be a scare to some old Nintendo fans who are looking for the classic art of gaming. All this emphasis on inspiring others to play video games may detract from that art. Did the DS Lite receive TIME.com’s honor for all the wrong reasons?
