Tiscali blocking P2P, EVE, CoD4, Quake Wars multiplayer?
There’s a thorn with every rose, and in the line of broadband Internet, ain’t that a fact? We’ve heard about Time Warner Cable and World of Warcraft connectivity issues before, but this new ISP issue is packing smoke. Subscribers of Tiscali are disgruntled at the apparent blocking of peer-to-peer (P2P) connections by their ISP. Even multiplayer connectivity is also hampered, as complaints roll in from players on EVE Online, CoD4, and ET: Quake Wars.
Word is that loyal subscribers of Tiscali‘s broadband ISP service in the UK are being blocked from accessing certain sites, as well as P2P (peer-to-peer) services, during certain times of the day. Some have also complained that overall access throughput has been degraded during such hours, though others complain having intermittent problems in other parts of the day.
Gamer complaints include connectivity issues to servers running EVE Online, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (on PS3), and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (assumed on PC). Some Sony PlayStation 3 users have also complained that they cannot access the PlayStation Network, denying them of updating their console on time or any online activity.
Information gathered from the service’s forums suggest that Tiscali is still investigating the problems and trying to figure out what could be the cause. As of press time, there is no official word on the matter of P2P blocking. So for now, this’ll run under rumors until the air clears.
There seems to be a growing dissent among the subscribers, however, and some even have claimed that Tiscali is in breach of contract for exercising port and service blocking. More information to come as developments roll by.
