Top 100 Games of the 21st Century

The Colin Campbell and Joe Keiser of Next-Gen.Biz, who must have had some serious time on their hands, created what could be the most impressive list in gameland: The Top 100 Games (for the PS2/Xbox/GameCube platforms only) based on sales. We listed the Top 5 right here (starting at 5) and we’ll tell you where you can read the whole honor roll later. Drum roll, please…

mario5. Super Smash Bros Melee
Nintendo/GameCube/December 2001
Estimated Sales: 3.2 million
Revenues: $125 million

Great marketing strategy is credited for this game’s success. Of course, its great fighting gameplay didn’t hurt it, either.

madden 4. Madden NFL 2004
EA/PS2/August 2003
Estimated Sales: 3.5 million
Revenues: $170 million

Named after Super Bowl-winning professional football coach for the Oakland Raiders during the 1970s, John Madden. The coach insisted he would only endorse a game as close to real life football as possible. Obviously, he signed up with EA.

gt33. Gran Turismo 3:A-Spec
SCEA/PS2/ July 2001
Estimated Sales: 3.8 million
Revenues: $120 million

GT3‘s killer app style, graphics and simulation-style driving mechanics are what a hungry PS2 market was looking for. The first PS2 pack-in title helped drive sales even further.

halo2. Halo
MS/Xbox/November 2001
Estimated Sales: 4.2 million
Revenues: $170 million

“Halo didnÂ’t just save the Xbox at launch. Halo is Xbox,” say GameBiz. A great shooter gameplay, science fiction storyline, and addictive multiplayer made it one of those must-have titles.

gta1.Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
Rockstar/PS2/October 2003
Estimated Sales: 7 Million
Revenues: $300 Million

Ruling the list is GTA:Vice City. While the gameplay alone could have sold millions, the company used controversial marketing strategy to make gamers ache for it.

If you want to know what other games made the cut, you can go read the full Next-Gen list right here.
