Turbine adjusts DDO death penalty system for fans

DDOThe last time we talked about the new death penalty system for Dungeons and Dragons Online, we all pretty much agreed that Turbine won’t be removing it just because the fans didn’t like it. No less than David Eckelberry himself mentioned that it’s not a feature to be liked by fans. “It’s a penalty for a reason – it represents a serious reason to avoid dying as much as you can,” said Eckelberry. Though as fatherly and as caring as it sounds, fans are still not satisfied with the former’s explanation.

Anyway, DDO Community Relations Specialist Samara dropped by the game’s official forum today and stated that changes have been implemented with system. “The first change we made was to increase the amount of experience you regain by using a Resurrection Shrine from 25% to 50% to match the amount granted by using the Raise Dead Spell.” Samara pointed this out to ensure that Clerics and other characters with high “Use Magic Device” skill will no longer suffer the worst death penalties of any class.

Furthermore, it seems that Turbine couldn’t afford not to listen to fans as the curve that defines the death penalty was adjusted. Samara posted, “You should see a much smoother progression from now on, and there shouldn’t be any radical jumps in the death penalty as you level. You will notice that the death penalty for levels 11 and 12 have dropped significantly.” Prior to the change, level 12 characters suffer 4000XP penalty every time they die.

Lastly, Samara mentioned that they are considering one more change to help casual players and those who control multiple characters. “When a character is inactive their death penalty will slowly fade away. So a single bad night will not cripple a characterÂ’s advancement.”
