U.S. videogame sales reached $401 million in October
Wedbush Morgan Securities (WMS), a financial services and investment firm, estimated sales of video games in the U.S. last month could have reached US$ 401 million. When the number crunching is completed and proves WMS’ crystal ball is correct, this means you guys helped game developers and publishers sell 10% more this year compared to last year.
Some of the titles that helped cash registers loud and clear this October include Vivendi SA is a video game developer; formerly known as Vivendi Universal”>Vivendi‘s Scarface: The World is Yours (PS2, Xbox, PC), Midway’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon (PS2, Xbox), Ubisoft‘s Splinter Cell Double Agent (Xbox 360, PS2, Xbox, GC, PC), LucasArts‘ Lego Star Wars II: The Original Trilogy, and Nintendo’s Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
According to WMS, 11 game titles sold 100,000 copies each last month compared to 8 in October 2006.
WMS said while the combined sales of games for PS2, Xbox, GameCube, GBA was US$ 228 million, it went down by US$ 94 million. On the other hand they do expect an increase of US$130 million in next generation and handheld portable software sales (Xbox 360, PSP, and DS) will peak at US$ 173 million.
If these WMS figures say anything it’s gamers are slowly moving on to next-gen consoles and could be the beginning of the end of current-gen systems.
