Ubisoft Boss Speaks “Sony must react to 360”.
Shortly after Ubisoft made a strong public display of support for Microsoft‘s Xbox 360 platform by pledging the next installment of the Splinter Cell series as a console exclusive, president Yves Guillemot stated that Sony has been forced into a reactionary posture by Microsoft’s strong showing.
Though Guillemot was quick to praise Microsoft’s X06 display with kind words, he was nevertheless careful not to insinuate that Sony’s lead might be in danger, noting that “Sony is very far ahead in terms of market share so it’s not possible to say today – we will see how Sony reacts. But there is more competition, which we think is good.” We couldn’t agree more with that last point, he expands upon this by adding “It’s good to have many players on the same battlefield; I think it will push Sony to react, and also Nintendo to look at how they position themselves to make their machine a success. When the manufacturers are making great games and pushing each machine hard it can help everybody make the videogames business a better business.”
Guillemot also goes on to discuss his company’s reasons for dedicating the next iteration of their Splinter Cell franchise to the xbox platform citing a need for focus in order to truly tap the console’s potential; “Splinter Cell was created on the first Xbox, so we thought it was important to come back for one volume with Microsoft to create a very good quality title focused on using the full power of the system.” If that’s the intent then I can only say I wish more publishers thought that way, focusing their efforts on delivering the maximum possible experience on a specific platform rather than the lowest common denominator lazy port jobs we so often get. It’ll be interesting to see how the next Splinter Cell game turns out.
