In a recent interview with Ubisoft‘s business development manager, Fabrice Pierre-Elien, he talks about the importance of new franchises in the industry, where Ubisoft is headed now, and how they have an advantage with the Wii this holiday season.

Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed (PS3, Xbox 360, PC), topped charts on its release and Assassin’s Creed 2 is already under way. However, Pierre-Ellen expresses that while sequels are crucial, it’s the development of new franchises that improve the quality of future games:

We take the time in between […] sequels to make the best possible game, not just another title of which the previous edition was out twelve months ago […] The more franchises you have, the more time you can take to make sure the next one is as good as it can be.

He also says that now that the next-gen consoles are maturing, Ubisoft will be focusing on third party development:

It’s also a very good time for us in terms of third party business. […] We weren’t very big in that particular segment, but now we have the means to work with bigger studios externally, and that’s a part of the business we want to continue to grow.

Finally Pierre-Elien also stated that Ubisoft has an advantage with the Wii this holiday season, saying that because they were on board with the console ever since it came out, they have the advantage of expertise and talent to develop games for the platform.
