Ubisoft: ‘PS3 price must drop in 2007’

PS3Assassin’s Creed could be among the type of console-exclusive games that sell not only itself, but the console it is coming out for as well. It may have boosted PlayStation 3’s stock, but the president of the company behind the said game have some concerns of his own. Yves Guillemot, Ubisoft president, issued a call geared towards Sony saying that the company must drop the price of PS3 next year for it to be a bigger threat to the competition.

Expressing the same view Bill Gates recently ushered, Guillemot agrees that 2007 can be pivotal for the next-gen console war among the triad of gaming industry – Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. The next year could determine which company will dominate the others for the next decade. With this in consideration, according to him Sony must be prepared to slash off some amount on the PS3’s current price tag (around $600) for it to compete heavily against MS’s Xbox 360.

While PS3 is arguably the best console among the three next-gen machines hardware-wise, the Ubisoft head thinks such advantage can not guarantee overall lordship, especially with some believing it’s too expensive. He added that it’s a given it will have a successful launch come this November, but the pricing may lose momentum after a couple of months due to its too-heavy-for-ordinary-shoppers price tag.

Ubisoft is among the big-named companies currently focused on developing titles for next-gen consoles. It already has a Wii-exclusive in the form of Red Steel, and will also be coming up with a game solely for PS3, Assassin’s Creed (although there have been some rumors that it might be coming to Xbox 360 as well).
