Ubisoft Wants The Number 2 Position
In an interview with Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot, he boldly claimed that the company’s superior investment in next-gen development will churn out the best titles. These titles will then be key to Ubisoft’s quest for the number two position in the games publishers race in the west.
When asked what makes Ubisoft’s titles different from rivals’, Guillemot replied, “I think it’s our investment in the next-gen consoles. We invest more in the next-gen consoles than our competitors so we will create better quality games.”
With such huge investment comes a rapid expansion of Ubisoft’s development resources. And we’re talking about growth at a rate of 600 people per year. Ubisoft wants to keep opening new studios in new countries. This goal is close to being achieved as the company brought in additional 80 staff members into the fold through the purchase of UK-based Driver developer Reflections.
Ubisoft is number three in Europe last year and is geared towards reaching number two. In the US, the company is at number five last year but wants to get as close as possible to the number two position. With Electronic Arts dominating the field, number two seems to be the only option for Ubisoft.
Elsewhere in the interview, Guillemot revealed that the RPG genre is the major area Ubisoft wants a foothold in. This pretty much explains why we have little evidence of the new sports range promised early this year. Guillemot offers an explanation:
“We are interested still by sports and we are working on that, but we can’t say much now because it’s quite difficult to get in – but we will be there at one point,” he maintained. “We are also very interested by RPG. And the RPG segment is really very close to the action-adventure segment where we are, so we think we can get in there quite quickly. In the future MMO will also be a big component but in the short term the RPG is really the kind of products we want to create.”
