UK’s Trading Standards Institute looking into PS3 imports

PS3s make money for other people.UK importers, eBay entrepreneurs, and price gougers better beware. It seems Sony‘s working with the Trading Standards Institute to stop the grey market importation of PS3 units in the UK.

According to a report in MCV, Sony’s informed the Trading Standards Institute of the company known as Mastercash, which is not only saying it can provide Europeans with PS3s in time for Christmas, but has also put up ads to get the word out.

The ad on the left is one such piece of promotional material. Calling the number leads to a recorded voice asking people to leave their details so they can be informed of the availability of stock and whether Mastercash will be delivering a Japanese or American PS3 to said number.

Till then, Sony’s looking very grim towards any potential price gouging or attempts to sell the PS3 in Europe before its time. As a Sony spokesperson told MCV, “We have forwarded the details on to Trading Standards, and urge all consumers to wait until the official European PS3 launch in March.” When Sony tells gamers to wait, we hope people heed the company’s words.
