Up close and personal with Toshiba’s new HD DVD player

Lorin Thwait has written about the new Toshiba HD DVD player, released last week in the US. Instead of being your normal consumer and plugging it into your HD TV, Lorin Thwait dismantled his HD DVD player, to see whats inside.

To my amazement, most of the parts in the Toshiba player aren’t complicated. They seem like your run of the mill PC parts, and when plugged into a PC, the HD DVD drive actually comes up as “_NEC HDDVD HR1100A“, which is a recently released HD DVD reader that also reads normal DVDs and CDs.

Here are some more details about the Toshiba player dismantled by Lorin Thwait:

  • Contains 256Mb NAND Flash memory (“should be able to attach directly to a normal PC and act as a 256 meg flash disk”)
  • Hard drive inaccessible from Windows XP. Accessible in Vista?
  • Cost $560 from Best Buy

This article is a must read for all those that interested in the HD DVD/Blu ray war.
