*UPDATE* Playstation 3 Firmware 1.80 is OUT; hello to PS1, PS2, DVD upscaling and remote play, among others

PS3 FW 1.80 now out - Image 1 Just a few hours before May 24 and guess what decided to spook everyone on the PlayStation Network? Apparently, the latest PS3 v1.80 Firmware is now out. Thanks to JollyRoger, Saint21, and salimdao for giving us a heads up.

Just a while ago, JollyRoger dropped us a line, saying:

Hi guys, its about 9:15pm here in phoenix and still wednesday, buy 1.80 just came out and I’m downloading it now, so let everyone know, LAter!

Saint21, meanwhile, confirmed a couple of details for us:

What was mentioned earlier is true. When it comes to dvd upscaling, some dvd’s wouldn’t upconvert through component or d-terminal. You can zoom in Photo as well as trim. New slide show created.

Right now, we’re still downloading the firmware and there’s still no sign of any changelog. We’ll keep you guys updated though – we’re just kept in suspended animation as we wait for the update to finish… Right now, we just wanted to let you guys know about its availability. So get a-downloading, folks!

UPDATE: Cool beans. Our download’s finished and I made sure to write down the list of features that FW 1.80 will give you. I’ve reproduced them below, word for word. Check them out:

  • You can now upscale the video content of PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software to HD resolution.
  • You can now copy saved data from PlayStation and PlayStation2 format software to a memory card or memory card (8MB) (for PlayStation 2) using a memory card adaptor.
  • You can now upscale video content of DVDs to HD resolution. However, some DVDs cannot be upconverted when outputting through component or D-Terminal connectors.
  • Support has been added to allow remote play over the Internet.
  • You can now display image files and play music and video files that are saved on a remote device with server functionality (such as a PC or digital video recorder) over a network.
  • Support for a print function has been added under [Photo]. For more information on supported printers, refer to the SCE Web site for your region.
  • Support for zoom and trimming has been added under [Photo].
  • A new type of slideshow has been added as a feature under [Photo].
