Vicious Engine now licensed for use with PS3

The Cell’s vicious, we tell you, vicious. Vicious Cycle’s middleware engine, Vicious Engine, has recently been licensed by Sony as part of the family of PlayStation 3 Tools and Middleware License Program. This makes Vicious four-for-four: besides the PS3, Vicious is also authorized for use with Wii and Xbox 360 SDKs, as well as the PSP.

(Vicious Engine also runs on PS2 and PC, but no PR for the PC yet. No PR for the PSP either, but hey, with Dead Head Fred in development, why would Vicious be locked out of the handheld?)

Okay, we’re not going to make that comparison with Unreal Engine. In an interview with Gamasutra we covered earlier, they revealed that Vicious Engine has a different approach compared to Epic Games’ middleware offering. Vicious is more general, not just limited to maxing out FPS/TPS gameplay, which would see the middleware being used in a variety of IP genres. Vicious is also promoting their engine as an easy-to-use, fully supported middleware for indie developers wishing to try and break into any of the now approved console SDKs that will run Vicious Engine.
