Video: Blizzard talks StarCraft II

In each instance that the boys at Blizzard come up with a new release, the gaming world seems to come to a screeching halt to take the time out to drool over the usually astounding work they accomplish. Whether it’s a new title or an expansion of an existing title, money is usually well-spent with their wares. Be it in the U.S., Korea or anywhere else, their stalwart Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft franchises are regarded in mythic proportions and keep players rocking for years, and even decades on end.

This video shows IGN’s developer interview with the team tasked with bringing the world a sequel to the immortal RTS. In this sequence, areas such as marketing, features and responding to the global phenomenon are discussed. The developers reveal that they’re exploring the new technology available to bring more on-screen units to life. Plans to exploit and innovate Battlenet are also in the works, all the while placing emphasis on giving the single player campaign mode some serious weight and replay value.

It’s revealed that old favorites such as Sarah Kerrigan and Jim Raynor will make appearances in the new plot, though the level of impact that they’ll have is still unrevealed. Blizzard says they plan on diversifying the races even more. For instance, the Protoss may now have the ability to warp through levels. Unit cap is still set at 200. though that may be revoked eventually.

With its massive international following, the years of anticipation and the promises of taking the franchise to the next level, it’s a no-brainer that the game’s name alone sells itself. The only question in our collective minds right now is whether or not the game will live up to the hype or end up as a flop. Given Blizzard’s track record, the smart money goes to the first option.
