Video Games Live Symphony: Classic Culture Clashes With Pop Culture
We don’t know if Jack Thompson and fellow birds-with-the-same-ruffled-feathers made it but this is one video game festival we know will get their seal of approval. Video Games Live (VGL) is an innovative concert featuring music from many of the most popular video games performed live by choirs and a full symphony orchestra.
Okay, that sounded boring even for us. But there’s more. As the symphony orchestra pumps up the brass and the strings, they will be accompanied by exclusive video footage and music arrangements, lasers, synchronized lighting, and other unique interactive segments “creating a cutting-edge and exciting concert experience for both video game enthusiasts and families.” Not convinced? How about “an explosive one-of-a-kind entertainment experience!” Still have doubts? Then look at the photos. See! This isn’t just for gamers who also happen to be in the school band.
In fact, VGL tickets were sold out during their GDC performance in San Jose. The follow-up show at the Merriam Theatre in Philadelphia early this month was pretty hot as well. Tommy Tallarico (Advent Rising theme composer) said, “It was such an incredible night! The crowd in Philly seemed to be the loudest and most excited yet. It’s so amazing to be able to bring something like this to a brand new area and audience for the first time. We’ll be looking forward to coming back again next year!” The Philly concert was created and produced by Mystical Stone Entertainment LLC, founded by game composers Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall (who wrote the Jade Empire theme).
The VGL Philadelphia set list included selections and exclusive arrangements from the following: Classic Arcade Medley; Metal Gear Solid; Castlevania; God of War; Interactive Symphony starring Space Invaders; Beyond Good & Evil; Medal of Honor; EverQuest II; Zelda; Tron; Interactive Symphony starring Frogger; Kingdom Hearts; Myst; Sonic; Warcraft; Final Fantasy; Advent Rising; Mario; and Halo.
Now that we have your attention, the next VGL will be at Hilbert Circle Theatre in Indianapolis and will feature the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Performances are scheduled on August 11 and 12 but you can get your tickets now right here.
