Video: Metal Gear Online interview
Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence heralded the marquee Metal Gear franchise’s entry into the online gaming scene, followed up by the online gaming mode featured in Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Some referred to the bundled online modes as Metal Gear Online (MGO), but little did we all know that the real MGO was yet to arrive.
In the celebration for the Metal Gear franchise’s 20th anniversary, Konami announced that it would be releasing Metal Gear Online, a stand-alone title which is based on the gameplay and graphics of the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots for the Sony PlayStation 3. What makes it different and why is it independent from MGS4? Let’s have the devs explain that here:
Essentially, the core idea behind MGO is simple: You take out the opposing team much like other online combat titles. What makes it different is the style in which you go about things to meet that end. Players can choose various skills such as hacking, CQC, armed fighting and much more. What’s really intriguing at this point is what the SOP system stands for and what it’s about.
Near as we can figure from the available info, SOP is linked to the nanomachine concept initiated in Metal Gear Solid 2 which is to be expanded in MGS4. Hacking into enemy SOPs seems to be shaping up as a valuable recon skill which will enable you to listen in and get the drop on opposing squads. We’ll fill you in for more as news is forthcoming.
