Video – MLB 09: The Show: improved artificial intelligence for realistic experience
Slow news day, maybe it’s because of the inauguration? I feel like everyone in the biz dropped whatever they were doing and partied with Obama. Oh well. Anyway, we’ve got this video for MLB 09 The Show featuring the baseball title’s new and improved artificial intelligence. Check it out.

There were a lot of things about last year’s game so developers would want this year’s to be as realistic as it can go. They noted down four main points that they added extra effort into.
- CPU fielder routes to the ball – Not just anyone can have doubles and triples in this MLB, no sir. The batter needs to get out of the box appropriately, make each trip to the bases, and each of these trips will take about the same time as the actual player in real life.
- Infielder Hot Shots – Another thing that sucks about MLB 09: The Show‘s predecessor was that the fielders were gods at catching the ball, so much that they caught pretty much everything that they could reach.
- Tags – They also made an entirely new system when it comes to tagging. This time, tags will not be as simple as baseman makes the catch and faces you. Each base now has its own setup which varies depending on where the throw comes from. Interesting. Even the catcher gets a few tweaks with an all-new system for pickoffs and backpicks.
- Pitcher / Batter duel – Of course, the most intricate improvements go to where the action is always at. They didn’t go on the specifics, but Chris Gill of the MLB 09: The Show team writes, “This is extremely important to us here on the MLB 09 The Show Team, and I know youÂ’ll appreciate the advanced technology, logic and dedication that has gone in to it.”
Looking good, MLB 09: The Show does seem promising. The team really went heavy on the little details that make the game experience realistic. Hats off to Sony Computer Entertainment.
