Videos of GTA: Vice City Stories working on 2.71 SE-B custom FW

To kick things off, we here at QJ would like to thank SooperGooman for sending this in. So let’s go straight to the topic, shall we? Yesterday, we reported that Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories is playable with homebrew on 1.5 via wonder app Devhook. Now thanks to SooperGooman’s tip, we have concrete proof that the game’s UMD won’t require FW 2.81 and can also run on Dark_Alex‘s 2.71 SE-B custom firmware using a crude but effective UMD-swap trick. Translation for the uninitiated – you could play what is arguably the hottest game in town and still be able to enjoy all those homebrew goodness.

He informed us that he recalled an article about when “GTA Liberty City Stories came out, about the bait and switch technique for playing 2.00 games on a 1.5 psp without any loaders.” So with that, he tinkered with his second PSP loaded with the 2.71SE-B. He popped in the SOCOM Fire Team Bravo UMD and as soon as it started to “change from the colors in the boot screen into the plain white background with the PSP logo in the middle”, out goes SOCOM and in goes GTA:VCS, and yup, it did work. He mentions that it took about 10 seconds for his idea to be confirmed.
