Warcraft Universe To Expand To the Big Screen

World of Warcraft

Ever since the first Warcraft title was released in 1994, Blizzard Entertainment’s popular game has always had a loyal following. This even grew in number when the title won several Game of the Year awards and when more titles included in the Warcraft series were released – Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness in 1995, Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos in 2002, and, the online game World of Warcraft.

The Warcraft world will be expanding soon, but I’m not talking about the planned China expansion. World of Warcraft will be hitting the big screen in the near future as Blizzard Entertainment has entered into an agreement with Legendary Pictures to develop a live-action film that is based on the Warcraft universe.

Blizzard Entertainment agreed to a movie version of Warcraft only recently because different companies who approached them before didn’t seem right for the project. According to the chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment Paul Sams, “They (Legendary Pictures) clearly share our high standards for creative development, and because they understand the vision that we’ve always strived for with our Warcraft games, we feel there isn’t a better studio out there for bringing the Warcraft story to film.”

When asked about Legendary Pictures’ plans on the film version of the Warcraft series, Jon Jashni, Legendary Pictures’ chief creative officer says this about the project: “We are intending to approach this as we would the adaptation of a best-selling novel: respect the essence of all that it is but also build upon that fertile base while translating it into a new medium.”

Hopefully, this move to create a film based on the Blizzard game will boost the popularity of the Warcraft series more and will enable even non-gamers to appreciate the vast expanse of the Warcraft universe.
