As most veteran online gamers will admit, reputation is worth a lot in the game. The developers from EA Mythic know this and have taken this into consideration with the Trophy system for their upcoming MMORPG Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

The Trophy system is a reward system which doubles as a method for players to customize their characters further. By displaying these items, player can expect to make a unique character that’s easily recognizable by other members of the community.

Of course, adding this feature into the game was not something the developers did on impulse. It was a carefully planned move which made sure that players can get the most out of the feature. In the end, the devs had to make some “diversity decisions” before finally adding it into the game.

The first involved placement of the trophy. The devs decided that the number of places a trophy could go had to exceed the number you could wear. This was done to ensure that a very large number of “permutations and combinations” were available when arranging the trophies.

The second was the removal of stat boosts from the trophy. The developers pointed out that if it did have stats, there would naturally be an optimal combination of five trophies that would be in demand by power-gamers. While this is fine for normal loot, a large chunk of the player base might end up sporting the same five trophies which would have killed the devs plan of making the game more diverse.

The third had to do with custom attachment points for each piece of armor in the game. This simply means that the location of the trophies had to make sense (no crotch-covering skulls for the forces of good). For example, Witch Hunters have trophy slots on their bandoleers, while Orcs will have lots of slots on their shoulder-pad spikes.

The fourth and last decision was the attachment of the Trophies. It doesn’t get attached to specific bits of Armor but to the player themselves. This, in effect, allows players to swap out their armor at will without worrying about the placement of their trophies.

The last point discussed was how players were to obtain these trophies. Each of the trophies had to be, according to the developers, “badassery-compliant.” To make a long story short, this just means that the harder the task to obtain the trophy, the more awesome it looks.

So there you have it, the trophy system in the game. While this may not be a new concept, the developers from EA Mythic seem to know what they’re doing and have created a system much better than anything this blogger has seen in any MMORPG.
