Two factions of Elves reside in the lands of Ulthuan in Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. These are the High Elves, and the Dark Elves. This is the story of how these two factions split apart from what was once a unified race.

It started with the first Phoenix King of Ulthuan, who drew the Sword of Khaine, which was cursed. Fearing that the King’s son, Malekith, would inherit the curse, the elven people instead raised Bel-Shannar to the throne.

Malekith, resentful of this, rose up in prominence among the elven race. Eventually he found an opportunity to assassinate Bel-Shannar. When he did, he made his way to the Shrine of Asuryan, to get the blessing of the Elven gods.

However, the gods denied him and burnt him, leaving him disfigured. He and his people, the Dark Elves, ran to the land of Nagarythe. The rest of the Elven race gave chase to Malekith, cornering him and forcing him to do something desperate.

In a mad plan, Malekith released the power of Chaos from the Vortex, tearing the land of Nagarythe apart and giving birth to what is now known as the Shadowlands. The place is now a wasteland, but also a treasure trove of historical relics.

Among the relics found in the Shadowlands is a prophecy that talks of hope to stop the plans of the Dark Elves, who play a major role in the forces of destruction in the Age of Reckoning. Will the prophecy be fulfilled?
