Wedgewood talks Enemy Territory

ETQWWe’ve got some more info on Quake Wars”>Splash Damage Ltd’s upcoming FPS, Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars, and it’s all coming from the owner and lead game designer himself. Paul Wedgewood did have a little chat with Computer Games Online, and they did talk about a whole lot on the general storyline of the game, the method applied to it, and the gameplay featured in it.

According to Wedgewood, ETQW is actually a prequel to the Quake series, and it is set during the alien Strogg invasion of Earth in 2065. So, taking upon one of the characters, the gamer then fights within a coordinated squad, with a vast range of items, tools, weapons, vehicles, defense turrets, and artillery types. The game also has a strong focus on on-foot combat, as much as there are air and ground vehicles.

Making the game objective-driven, says Wedgewood, “leads to a much more intense and immersive combat experience. This asymmetry comes with its own unique set of challenges for designers, because with one team attacking and the other defending, the gameplay balance is much tougher to get right.”

There are currently 12 maps in the works to span four campaigns. In each map there will be a sequence  of objectives driven by the plot. The maps will also be featuring a combination of vehicle, on-foot and artillery combat, “with lots of variation between outdoor, urban and indoor battles.”

As for whether or not the game will have a ranking system in place, he says,

It was very important to us that the ranking system in ETQW continued to reward players effectively for good teamplay, without unbalancing the gameplay itself. On that basis, Kevin Cloud and I decided early on that while player status should be reflected persistently, player rewards should and could affect gameplay but would re-set at the start of the each new campaign. That way you get the advantage of kudos ranking without unbalancing the game or penalizing players who’ve joined more recently.
