Weekend Slowdown: Everything I needed to know I learned from gaming webcomics

Most of what I really need to know about gaming, how to act in online communities, and how to act like a decent gamer, I learned reading online webcomics. Gaming non-wisdom was not granted to me by the press releases and the marketing machines that feed all of us; it was found in the works of those members of the gaming community who strive to be vocal enough to preach, and brave enough to be humorous.

No matter who you are or how old you are, green n00b or cranky old arcade dinosaur, when you go meet each other, when you look for gaming stuff on the Internet, and when you read reviews and rumors, it’s easier if you all just learned to laugh at each other, with each other, and at yourselves.

Gaming non-wisdom was not granted to me by the press releases and the marketing machines that feed all of us; it was found in the works of those members of the gaming community who strive to be vocal enough to preach, and brave enough to be humorous. These are the things I learned:

Share vital information, lest a team member dies – online multiplayer requires teamwork, coordination, and communication.

Everything you need to know is there, in the wild mess of the Internet, somewhere: not being an jerk, knowing when to shut up, being nice to n00bs, and cleaning up after yourself.

And it is still the truth, no matter who you are or how old you are, green n00b or cranky old arcade dinosaur, when you go meet each other, when you look for gaming stuff on the Internet, and when you read reviews and rumors, it’s easier if you all just learned to laugh at each other, with each other, and at yourselves.
