“Western” MMOGs worth US$ 1.5 billion by 2011

Screen Digest - Research report claims Western MMO industry will reach US$ 1.5 billion - Image 1

The report from Screen Digest has highlighted that the MMO games from the West generated US$ 875 million in worldwide revenue last year, with US$ 299 million earned by Europe and US$ 576 million raked in by North America. US$ 761 million of that entire revenue were from subscriptions alone.

As per analysis, the report claims that the MMO game industry will be able to double the revenue in the next four years, due to the growth in popularity of selling virtual items for cash and in-game advertising. Blizzard‘s World of Warcraft alone rakes in huge cash from their eight million user base worldwide, although it is rather abysmal to Nexon‘s and Wizet‘s free MapleStory.

Now while this is a handsome (and ostentatious) case of optimism, are they really sure that all MMO gamers will be willing to let game publishers just take money from them? And let’s face it: half the time the subscriptions, especially in World of Warcraft (reaching over 8 million people), are just new repeated attempts by the same player.

So are the report’s claims viable? Only time will tell. And online gamers will most likely make or break that claim.
