What Is “Simple Start” Wi-Fi? Wii Connection or Development Left Over?
With what you have to go through to find this, the first thing on our mind would be some bonus feature or secret level in a game. But a special, “hidden” Wi-Fi connection? To where does it go? Masterlinkx posted a video of this “Simple Start” Wi-Fi connection he found in his DS, using Metroid Prime Hunters as a demo. He also says that Nintendo warns not to do what he did, because “it’s dangerous.” Detailed instructions are in the video, but the short of it is:
- Go to Configue Wi-Fi (through the game’s multiplayer mode).
- Pick any Wi-Fi setting to load, then tap “Search Access Point.”
- Once that’s finished, tap “Back.”
- Here’s where it gets dangerous. Take a toothpick and press down on the top-leftmost corner of the touchscreen.
The result? Top screen: “Connect Easily to a Simple Start Wi-Fi compatible access point.” Touchscreen: “Awaiting Simple Start Wi-Fi Connection. Press the Simple Start Wi-Fi button.” What Simple Start Wi-Fi button? It’s clear the DS is searching for it because of a spinning icon at the bottom-right hand corner of the touchscreen, and a bit later the DS promptly replies, “Simple Start Wi-Fi startup failed.” It’s not just Metroid Prime. Others have tried it on Star Fox Command, Tetris DS, Mario Kart DS, and Animal Crossing on both the DS and Lite. Everyone who has seen it for themselves are wondering what the heck it’s for. Some of the theories include Wii-DS synching, a “Nintendo-specific wireless router” they have yet to unveil, or even an artifact from scrapped plans for DS units to directly connect via Wi-Fi.
Conspiracy theories are a dime a dozen. Nintendo warning you not to try this thing (as Masterlinkx pointed out), on the other hand, is something else entirely, and like children being told not to peek at the hidden package under the Christmas tree, this has fired up our curiosity. Hmm…
