Who Cares if PS3 Sells? Sony Doesn’t.
A company that doesn’t give a hoot about market share? Sony invested about $425 million on developing and hyping the PlayStation 3 and it doesn’t care if it sells or not? We started scanning the skies for flying pork chops, too, but that’s what SCEE president and CEO David Reeves told MCV. We’re not sure if Reeves was suffering from temporary insanity or was visited by Christmas Spirits the night before the interview but here’s the story:
The catfight between Nintendo and Sony over the PS3’s motion sensing controller isn’t over. Reacting to criticisms, SCEE president and CEO David Reeves said the PS3 controller has been in development for over two years long before details of the Wii controller were revealed at last year’s Tokyo Games.
“Some people have asked if it’s a last minute thing,” said Reeves. “ItÂ’s not – itÂ’s been planned for around two and a half years.” So why the secrecy? “If you have a device that includes 50 or 55 patents, you canÂ’t reveal it, as someone will try to file a patent to stop it.” In other words, the motion sensor was not a last ditch effort to pump up projected low PS3 sales. Then he went on to say “The name of the game is not market share, itÂ’s how fast we can grow the industry – our ambition is to grow 15 per cent a year on hardware and software if we can…whether we have 40, 50, or 60 per cent market share is not that important.”
Okay Mr. SCEE President/CEO. We hope you know what you’re doing.
