Wii gets honorable mention at Men’s Health

Nicole BelandNicole Beland (Ask the Girl Next Door from Men’s Health) has advice on how to make your girlfriend interested in gaming. “Calling her over to watch you pistol whip a hooker in GTA… is not the way. Maybe you should buy that new Nintendo system with the stupid name, Wii.”

Why? Because, she says, the Wii was “designed to suck video-dissing women into the virtual world.” Nicole, you’re spot-on right as usual (we’re buying your book, please autograph it).

A couple quick points we just have to point out:

  • The Wii continues to be a marketing juggernaut. It’s everywhere (moms on the evening train were talking about getting it for Christmas, and how their husbands will be the ones to wait in line).
  • Nicole Beland is never wrong. And now she’s saying the Wii might be a good way to get women hooked on gaming?
  • She said “Personally, I’m addicted to Rockstar’s Table Tennis and Tom Clancy‘s Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.” She’s not exactly a Nintendo fangirl (to the best of our knowledge, Table Tennis is only for the Xbox 360, and Chaos Theory came out on GameCube, but it’s also out on PS2 and Xbox). So this doesn’t seem like an overly biased statement.

At QJ, we’re nice, sentimental guys (that’s why we read Nicole Beland’s column), and we try to have a positive take on everything. So yeah, we’re all for getting moms and women in general and old people hooked on gaming. Hey, it might finally legitimize our industry – all while pouring in more dollars into the coffers of game developers: dollars the better to develop better and more innovative games with.
