Wii rakes in most exclusive games

Here’s an ironic new twist to the console wars: the Wii has taken the lead in having the most exclusive games. Most of the attention from the console wars has been on the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3 but adding this to the success of the Wii, Microsoft and Sony might have to rethink their battle plans.

The data for counting comes from Gaming Target and they have a couple of stringent rules that apply to the word “exclusive,” but it seems to be an accurate way of qualifying what an exclusive is.

Some of the more pertinent rules state that if a game appears on the PC, it’s not counted in the tally since we’re talking console wars. Also, if a game appears in the previous gen of consoles, then it’s also not counted. Basically it only counts if and only if the console has a game all to itself (not counting the PC and Mac).

Other pertinent info of the data is that it focuses on North American tallies: titles that are limited to other countries aren’t counted. Also, the tallies include unreleased games and timed exclusives.

Taking that all into consideration (and others besides), the Wii has been found to have the most exclusives, having 150 titles to their name. The Xbox 360 has 101 titles and the PS3 has 50. Since March this year the console wars found the 360 as the clear winner but following E3, the Wii took a surprise leap up. More surprises may still be in store once the dust completely settles from E3.
