Wii reiterates free online play
In the continuing adventures of the fact-sheet-that-ate-the-world, Nintendo UK confirms that Wii’s online functionality will be free. This, despite the document (pictured above) saying otherwise. The marketing implement er, chart, above says that while PlayStation3 online will cost nothing, online functionality for Wii will only be free for the first six months.
TVG managed to contact Nintendo, and they report that a representative confirms that Wii’s online functionality will indeed be free like the Nintendo DS. Apparently, what will be free for only the first six months is not the Online Access itself, but the Opera Browser that is on Wii. Online Access – free. Opera Browser – just six months. Big difference compared to what’s implied in the chart.
With word roaming around that Microsoft is preparing to take legal action against Sony, is this a sign that Sony Marketing has gone a bit too far? We guess it’s only healthy competition when each company takes pot shots at the specs and capabilities of each console, but when dollar signs start getting attached to numbers, feathers start to get ruffled.
Sony’s got a rebuttal, but will that be enough to camouflage this faux-pas? Sigh. This reminds us of Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer.
