Wii Virtual Console and Controller in Action
We found a video of the Wii Virtual Console gamepad at E3 floating around the internet today. The emulation looks smooth, the graphics look crisp, and the controller looks comfortable. Unfortunately, however, the controller still appears to be wired. This is definitely a drawback of an otherwise great idea. The controller combines elements from all of Nintendo’s classic controllers. The two thumb-sticks are similar to the left stick on the Gamecube controller, and the buttons are similar to the Super Nintendo controller.
Questions have been asked about the Virtual Console controller and its usefullness for Nintendo 64 and Sega consoles, both of which have generally different button setups and controller layouts than most Nintendo controllers. The video illustrates the use of the controller with the N64 emulator. It still isn’t clear, but it’s safe to say that the D-pad will be used for the C buttons. An extra button has been added to the top of the unit to act as a Z button. You may remember your old Sega Genesis. This new controller definitely has enough buttons, but unfortunately they won’t be in that cascaded style, with three of them in a row. It’ll just take some getting used to.
But there is something else: a mysterious port (slot?) on the underside of the controller. What is this port/slot for? Could it be a charging port and the controller could potentially be wireless as well (much like the PS3 controller)? Seems unlikely at best. Could it be a memory pack slot? Or what about a rumble pack slot? Maybe it attaches to something, or something attaches to it? Any of those seem to be viable options, but until more details surface, for now we are left with speculation. Check it all out for yourself here.
