Wii with DVD headed to US
“There are currently no plans to bring this model to Europe or the US.” That’s what the Nintendo spokes person said around two weeks ago. Well, back then, despite that quote coming from a Nintendo spokesperson, the idea that there will be a Wii model toting a DVD playback was mostly considered to be rumor.
Until it got confirmed.
So now amid rumors that a more powerful Wii might be made some time in the future, we got word that Wiis having DVD playback will make their way to the US.
Gamespy reports that Nintendo has confirmed that a Wii with DVD playback support will be headed for the States, and said that the price would be slightly increased as a result of the added features. The DVD support is said to be handled by Sonic Solutions, the people responsible for the Roxio CD and DVD burning software. The DVD capable Wii should be arriving in the States in the latter half of next year, around the same time Japan will be getting theirs.
Nintendo is as always, keeping to themselves when it comes to info like this. It only makes sense. After all, they’ve got a launch to worry about. So there isn’t any word yet it if they’ll be adding anything else (like say, Digital 5.1 surround sound) into this “Wii plus plus.” We’ll keep you guys updated.
