WIICOS: The WI-IC MicroSD Edition

Well here’s a bit of an interesting little tidbit of Nintendo Wii information for the modders and homebrew developers out there. Apparently, there’s a new Wii modchip in development from the people at WI-IC that promises an “independent OS for homebrew applications.”

The above picture showcases the WI-IC MicroSD Edition. What you’re seeing above is a modchip with a removable SD card slot which would presumably allow you to put in all sorts of homebrew and other programs onto Wii through the chip. Since there isn’t a lot of information on the item as yet, here’s what the site listed as the features for their modchip creation:Full Upgrade via MicroSD - Image 1

  • Multi-Function LED indicator
    • POST (Power On Self Test)
    • Install Diagnostic and Status
  • Failsafe Update (recover after failed update)
    • Disc Channel (DVD)
    • Photo Channel (requires 1 extra wire)
  • Non-volatile configuration storage
  • Optional wire for full chip disable
  • ESD (anti static) packaging
  • RoHS compliant (PbFree)

That’s all the info we have about it for now, we’ll see what else we can dig up on this new development from the WI-IC team.
