Wiimotes have straps… Use them!

When images of the Wii and the Wiimote first started surfacing in 2005, many found the little wrist strap attached to the Wiimote a tad silly. They figured it was merely an accessory similar to those little dangly trinkets that you attach to your mobile phone or that whole farm of plush animal keychains that you have on your backpack.

But no. They were wrong. The people at Nintendo apparently knew EXACTLY what they were doing when they put these straps on Wiimotes.

In a recent incident which involves an unfortunate TV set, the wrist strap broke. In this case however, CAG forum member Ugamer_X scoffed at the instructions to “Attach wrist strap and keep your distance from other objects in the room”, went ahead with a round of Wii Sports and ended up paying the price for his bravado. Asked if he has repented for his wrongs, he says that “One shattered laptop screen and thrown Wiimote later, I’ve changed my position on the issue.”

The Wiimote has escaped the accident unscathed.

Also, now that we know the importance of the said Wii-Strap (I know, corny and I made it up… so I got tired of calling it just “wrist strap”…) could this be a cue for third-party accessory makers to start making more durable straps? That come in custom colors?

Another thing to ponder would be: Did the Nintendo guys add the strap there because, during the development process, they broke something too…? We can now insert slapstick comedy sequences here.
