Wii’s fallible modchips: incompatible with new Wiis
Wiinja, WiiKey, and CycloWiz. Three modchips making their mark among the many communities surrounding the Wii. All three are also facing one particular problem that definitely needs remedying, and that’s their inability to work on the latest Wiis.
On the GBATemp forums, Shaunj writes about the problems facing Wii modchips:
Users on the official Wiinja forums have discovered that a particular model of the Wii’s DVD drive is incompatible with the current modchips. The code/method currently used on the Wiinja and possibly the CycloWiz and WiiKey don’t affect the drive and the chips are useless once installed. Regardless of what another news site says, this means even if you install the WiiKey and the possibly upgradeable CycloWiz, you won’t be able to boot the necessary disc to update the chip if they do update the code to support this drive model.
Follow-ups to the news include confirmations from the CycloWiz and Wiinja modchip teams for their respective chips, with no word from Team Wiikey as of yet. The only way to check for it at present is to open up your Wii and look for the above picture of the DVD drive’s PCB. If your model shows up as “GC2-D2B,” then you’re one of the unlucky folks who has an incompatible drive model.
On the bright side… you DO have one of Nintendo’s Wiis.
