Will The Wii Be Your Second Console?

PSThWii60

Both Sony and Microsoft execs have been quick to point out that Wii would make an excellent companion piece to their respective consoles, and the net’s been aflame with supporters from both camps championing the advent of the Wii60 and the PSWii. Nintendo for their part must be loving every minute of it since they get the best of both worlds, they have a loyal fan base waiting in the wings to snap up the Wii, and even their former competitors consumers are showing signs of interest. But how many of us are actually going to pick  up a Wii in addition to our PS3’s and Xbox 360’s?

Both the 360 and the PS3 are aiming to give you a somewhat similar experience (let’s not split hairs), they’re both looking to wow you with awesome next generation, high definition visuals, bombastic physics, seamless network functionality and games so epic in scale and scope they would have been impossible to achieve on the previous generation of hardware. The Wii on the other hand seems to offer a quieter, more communal experience, with the emphasis on getting a few folks over for some good natured fun. With that in mind it’s no wonder many Sony and Microsoft gamers see how Nintendo’s consoles would help balance their gameplay.

What draws some is the recognition of the potentially different experience that the Wii offers, and wariness of the heart-stoppingly high price of purchasing both a PS3 and a 360. Can we really afford to buy games on multiple platforms at a price of $60 a title? Buying two games a month for each console would come to almost $380!

For others the Wii offers an avenue of return to franchises long since abandoned or forgotten in favor of more “grown up” fare, franchises like Mario, Zelda and Metroid, as well as a return to the familiar addictive Nintendo style of play promised by titles like Wii Sports and Excite Truck.

That said there are still many gamers content with just one console, either because they simply don’t want another, or can’t afford the added cost, both perfectly valid reasons.

What do you guys think, will you be getting a Wii as a second console, or sticking exclusively to your platform of choice, for whatever reason? Let us know in the comments and by voting in the poll (it’s in the far right sidebar, scroll down about halfway down the page).
