Will the Wii’s success benefit the Xbox 360 and PS3?

Console war - Image 1There was this short but interesting article posted by Wiigo which discussed the subject of whether or not the phenomenal market success of the Nintendo Wii could actually prove to be a synergy for its high-end rivals the Microsoft Xbox 360 and the Sony PlayStation 3. Here’s the idea in a nutshell:

We all know that the Wii’s mass appeal expanded the market by breaking age barriers open, letting the more casual crowd in the gaming scene with simple games with fun controls. What the article by Wiigo brings up is the question of whether or not this new demographic of gamers will actually find themselves wanting more and becoming hardcore gamers themselves.

It’s a really good concept that no study we know of has really delved into. It’s not impossible when you really think about it. A lot of gamers started with Mario from back in the day and evolved eventually into the voracious core crowd of today.

However, Wiigo questions the market impact of that very same idea in the long run. They write that while conversion will happen, there will not be as many as to impact market shares in a major way. After all, by the time the casual crowd gets an Xbox 360 or a PS3, they probably would have owned a Wii long before. Wiigo concludes it by saying “the pie is only getting bigger for Nintendo.” What do you think?
