WoW Forum: Questions on the Elemental Focus talent

Orc Shaman - Image 1While World of Warcraft‘s warriors appear to be having problems regarding their Devastate talent, a similar discussion is underway the shaman job class’ Elemental Focus (EF) talent. As a brief backgrounder, the Elemental focus talent gives shamans casting Fire, Frost, or Nature damage spells a chance to enter the Clearcasting state upon a critical spell hit – the Clearcasting state allows the spellcaster to activate their next spell for zero mana cost.

The issue here then is that previously, EF had been set to activate per chance for every Fire, Frost, or Nature damage spell hit, which gave non-crit build shamans more incentive to invest in this talent.

Going back to the matter of the WoW forums, Thunderhoof questioned Blizzard on why they tuned EF for crit strikes. The rest of the posters agree with Thunderhoof’s point, with some members (like Sunsa) further commenting that the new crit-based EF talent would force non-crit Shamans to pigeon-hole their talent builds just to make the most out of the ability. Blizzard spokesman Tseric replied with this post:

It’s not all that different from the Paladin Illumination change. It’s basically taking a “free” spell and having an actual cost in mana for it. Over time, the zero mana cost for spells can alter the total number of spells cast in a given amount of time. The devs felt that this was to large at one hundred percent, under current conditions, so they hemmed it in.

Not too many people appeared too happy with the recent fix, or Tseric’s reply for the matter. Just keep posted in case similar character discussions take place.
