WoW forums: Do the horde need Fear Wards?

WoW logo - Image 1As a backgrounder to this recent discussion that’s gone active (once again) at the World of Warcraft forums, we’ll be making a short explanation on the priest racial skill “Fear Ward.”

According to the WoWWiki, “This spell renders the target immune to one fear effect. The buff lasts 10 minutes, has a 30 second cooldown to recast, and is considered a magic effect. The buff is consumed even if the character is already immune to fear.” The spell is unique only to the Alliance’s Draenei and Dwarven priests, which is where this discussion begins.

As thread starter Seraphan reiterated, it seemed unfair that Blizzard would keep the highly effective Fear Ward strictly to the Alliance side of the game:

Why is it that the developers do not want the horde to have “Fear Ward” is it a vendetta or specific type of game mechanic that would greatly out balance the horde over alliance. I seem to be missing this aspect of how it would be over powered in comparison to the alliance. I’m sure the people who came up with the ideas for the undead and troll racials were very proud, because it made sense and felt right in line with how the class was designed.

As for Blizzard’s reply to this long-standing WoW balance issue, spokesman Nethaera replied that they (the developers) were planning to look at the Priest Racial Abilities in the near future. We know – this is almost a customary “We’ll think about it” reply, although given that WoW‘s patch 2.1.0 is the topic of concern, we’ll just have to wait until the devs truly decide to look into this matter.
