WoW: Opening of Dark Portal to have own in-game event?

darkportalWorld of Warcraft has become so massive that even players themselves are wondering about server queues and population. Needless to say, this imminent problem will be felt more when the expansion, Burning Crusade, arrives on the 16th and the succeeding days afterwards. Yes, old and new players will reunite, especially now that the Dark Portal will be opened anew.

Developer Blizzard is not going into specifics but they’ve hinted before that the opening deserves to have an event for itself. Fans speculate that players will gather around the artifact in the Blasted Lands and watch in awe. Despite these wild imaginings, the fear about servers not being able to handle population influx still lingers.

According to Blizzard‘s Tseric, it is nice of players to think about these things but there is no need to be worried. He explained in length:

Everything in life is a learning process, and we have learned a lot from every in-game event we have done as to how they can be improved. I’m not going to give anything away, but the player ‘clumping’ that you have concerns with is something we’re specifically attempting to avoid.

The re-opening of the dark portal is an event that will change Azeroth as we currently know it, and it’s only fitting that the tremble of such an event is felt throughout the world. It’s still likely that players will group up at the portal, but the event we’re planning won’t encourage it as the AQ event did.

Well, what more can we add but “If you say so!”. What we mean by that is all we have to hear is for them to say that they are on top of things. The arrival of the Burning Crusade and the opening of the Dark Portal are such momentous events, hopefully they wouldn’t be burdened with server lags.
