WoW: Overrated’s statement, and vids

C'thunThere’s always two sides to a coin, and even the guilty party has a right to air their side of the story. Besides, when somebody pulls off the heist or scam of the season, we may be shocked at the crime, and yet are filled with a sense of wonder, of wanting to know how they pulled it off. Remember Ocean’s 11 or Arsene Lupin?

And with that line of thought now in our heads, we’ll take another look at the recent permaban Blizzard Entertainment imposed on WoW‘s Guild Overrated over their recent Ahn’Qiraj AQ40 exploit, and just what Overrated has to say over the whole thing, as according to guild GM Kletus.

Kletus starts off his statement with a minor correction, pointing out that the patch used to cheat this dungeon was not Patch3 as had been rumored, but was Patch5.mpq. With that detail cleared up, Kletus began explaining why they did it, adding they only used the cheat after they had already cleared the area several times before.

Since the majority of our guild’s equipment is beyond that offered in the temple of AQ, there is little incentive for our raiders to go there at all. Basically all we get from there is a nasty repair bill. The only loot worth anything drops off of the last boss, so naturally it came to the point where only a handful wanted to go to AQ because of the incredible cost of time and gold, with little reward.

So in effect, the deed was done to make things easier for them, allowing for an even faster acing of an already-easy level, sans the excruciatingly long trekking that went with going through the level. And just how much has Overrated lost over the whole ordeal? As Kletus said in his parting remarks: “Estimated total eBay value of banned accounts: $60,000+. Was it worth it in the end? Hell yes.”

A thief is still a thief though (We don’t mean the rogue class, sorry), and while we gotta admire Overrated’s panache, we have to say that Gamesharking a console game just for kicks is one thing, but when you start cheating in an MMORPG populated by real-life players, rules are to be followed to keep the whole thing fun not just for your guild, but for the guys actually trying to grit it out and play fair. RIP, guild Overrated. We’re hoping other guilds out there won’t follow this sort of lowbrow gaming – You have been warned.

And for those curious as to how they pulled off the cheat, here’s the vid:
