Xbox 360 arrives in India

After months of anticipation, the Xbox 360 finally sets foot in the land of the largest liberal democracy in the world: India. The launch was made with much fanfare, with a quick appearance from Microsoft‘s brand ambassador, actor Akshay Kumar.

Apart from the console, Microsoft also took the opportunity at the launch to announce their special Xbox 360 game that was designed especially with the Indian market in mind. “Catch the special game, Yuvraj Singh Cricket 2007, all set to hit your stores soon,” said cricketer Yuvraj Singh, another brand ambassador.

The Xbox 360 core system is available in India for Rs 20,000 (US$ 435.95), while the Xbox 360 system is tagged at Rs 24,000 (US$ 523.15).

The India launch is part of Microsoft’s efforts to gain a wider market for their next-gen console. The Xbox 360 will also be making its way to South Africa and will hit retail stores in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland by the end of 2006.
