Xbox 360 Dashboard update reported to cause RROD

Xbox 360 owners may want to hold off on getting the latest Dashboard Update. It seems the update – which was supposed to fix HDMI-related sound issues – are causing some boxes to RROD. Coincidence, maybe, but why take the risk until you know for sure?

It seems the update – which was supposed to fix HDMI-related sound issues – are causing some boxes to RROD. Coincidence, maybe, but why take the risk until you know for sure?

The complaints came from the forums of Xbox.com itself, with over 30 posters claiming that their consoles died after the update. Some consoles died straight after applying the update, some died after playing a game with the update. Microsoft commented:

We are always taking steps to ensure our customers have the best experience on Xbox 360 and we have a detailed and comprehensive test and acceptance plan for our software updates to the console. If you are having any problems, please visit support.xbox.com so that we can assist you.

Fixing an HDMI-related sound issue doesn’t seem all that worth it if your risk bricking your console, specially if your warranty’s already expired. Might be best to wait till Microsoft releases more info on it.
