Xbox 360 D-Pad Mod

D-Pad before modD-Pad after mod

UFighterX (thanks for the heads up!) writes, “I should be able to buy a game system these days and have such a basic function [pertaining to the D-Pad] work properly.” And I second the motion, as I bet most of you also will. If most of us will just make do with these imperfections, UFighterX won’t. He’d actually do some tweaks of his own to achieve a better D-Pad performance.

Months ago, we featured UFighterX’s PSP D-Pad functionality mod, which gave your handheld a more PS1 feel and made the buttons easier to push. Today, he shares with us another D-Pad mod – this time out, it’s for Microsoft‘s next-gen console. This mod was brought about by complaints that the Xbox 360’s D-Pad can sometimes be very unresponsive.

UFighterX explains, “The problem with the d-pad is that the d-pad has no room to breath. It’s sunk deep into the controller shell without enough space for it to rock back and forth. This causes it to frequently hit the edge of the 360 controller shell which in turn blocks it from hitting the appropriate contacts.” With Mortal Kombat 3 and Street Fighter 2 hitting Xbox Live Arcade, UFighterX decided it’s high time to give us all a better Xbox 360 D-Pad functionality by teaching us all how to “shave some of the plastic off inside the d-pad” that will give more space for the 360 D-Pad to move.

All you’ll need to achieve this 360 D-Pad mod are low grit sandpaper (approx. 80 grit), high grit sandpaper (approx. 320 grit), #0 Phillips head screwdriver, #1 Phillips head screwdriver, small flat head screwdriver, and scissors. And although “this is a pretty easy mod“, according to UFighterX, you do need some ‘elbow grease’ to be able to do it perfectly…so proceed at your own risk.
